I interviewed Glyn Johns for the Leon Russell book. I could not help but ask a final question about Led Zeppelin at the end of the interview. Glyn produced that flawless debut. Here is a snippet of our interview discussing it. As with many such interviews, I was tickled to get to speak with Glyn, who produced so many of my favorite records.
I was reminded about our chat after watching the mesmerizing new film Becoming Led Zeppelin. I smiled and laughed throughout, giddy and newly astonished at this presentation of this amazing band’s origin story. When they finally launch into “How Many More Times” At a teen club in Denmark in 1969, it’s as if the world quaked, knocked by the hammer of the gods.
Glyn wrote in his book Sound Man that he excitedly played the record before it was released to such luminaries as Mick Jagger and George Harrison. No one seemed to like it. Why? What was it about it?
